U.S. Xpress Celebrates 15 Years as a U.S. EPA SmartWay Transport Partner

Chattanooga, Tenn. (June 10, 2019)– U.S. Xpress Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE: USX) (the ‘Company’), the nation’s fifth largest asset-based truckload carrier by revenue, celebrates 15 years as a SmartWay Partner. Launched in 2004, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) SmartWay program helps companies advance supply chain sustainability by measuring, benchmarking, and improving freight transportation efficiency.

For the second consecutive year, U.S. Xpress ranked in the top 20 percent of SmartWay carriers, producing 16 percent less smog in 2018 as compared to 2017. The Company has also been recognized with two SmartWay Excellence Awards for their industry-leading efficiency and contributions to clean air. Each year carriers submit emissions performance data to SmartWay for review to qualify as an official partner.

“Our 15-year relationship with SmartWay is a testament to U.S. Xpress’ commitment in environmentally responsible operations,” commented Eric Fuller, President and CEO of U.S. Xpress. “This partnership is one way we support sustainability initiatives that are important to our professional drivers, customers, and community.”

“U.S. Xpress knows that partnering with SmartWay is good for business, people and the environment,” said Cheryl Bynum, Director of EPA’s SmartWay. “By partnering with us, U.S. Xpress is demonstrating their commitment to sustainability through cleaner, lower carbon goods movement.”

Since 2004, SmartWay Partners have saved 215.4 million barrels of oil, $29.7 billion in fuel costs, and 103 million tons of air pollutants, the equivalent of eliminating annual energy use in more than 14 million homes.

U.S. Xpress’ solutions-oriented culture, combined with the latest computer simulation research, has allowed the Company to reduce pollutants year-over-year. U.S. Xpress’ energy efficient alterations include an emission control system, fuel-efficient tires, aerodynamic devices, an engine controller-based fuel incentive program, road speed limit policies, as well as a true GPS dual-mode satellite communications system.
